Black Rock State Park spans 444 acres of breathtaking forest and lake. Visitors can swim, hike, take in the views, and learn about the Native American lore and history of that area of Connecticut. Hiking trails offer views of Black Rock, Black Rock Lake, and Black Rock Pond, and autumn visits are a wonderful time to see the colorful New England foliage.

Black Rock State Park
Inside Black Rock State Park
The park is in the rolling hills of the Western Highlands, and offers many activities! Black Rock Pond, which got its name from the graphite deposits settlers were allowed to mine by the Native Americans, has steep, wooded ledges with a variety of trees. Take in the scenery while hiking the Mattatuck Trail, which connects the park to the Mattatuck State Forest.
You can also fish and swim at the park.
How to Get to
Black Rock State Park
From Route 8 north: Take Exit 38. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp to first traffic light. Turn left at the traffic light onto US Route 6 west. The park entrance is a 1/2 mile on the right on US Route 6.
From Route 8 south: Take Exit 38. Go straight ahead at the end of the exit ramp to US Route 6 west. The park entrance is on the right.
Entering Black Rock State Park
There is an entrance fee for Black Rock State Park. Fees don't apply to Connecticut residents.

The best time to visit Black Rock State Park is in late spring and early fall. Despite being in the mountains, the Georgia heat still makes summertime pretty hot. Early to mid-fall brings milder temperatures and colorful leaves.
Black Rock State Park may be in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but it's still in Georgia. Expect warm, humid weather for the majority of the year. Winter brings cold temperatures with a fleeting chance of light snow.
Black Rock State Park is home to both brown and black bears. There are also white-tailed deer, foxes, bobcats, and possibly mountain lions. The rivers and streams are filled with rainbow trout and bass.
There are designated RV campsites within the park. They offer water and electric hookups. The campground also offers a picnic shelter and hiking trails that connect with the park. There's a lake for swimming and fishing, too.
You don't need to reserve a camping spot in the park, but you risk not having a spot to sleep for the night, as the park stays busy throughout the year. Camping fees range from $34-$38 per night.
