Chewacla State Park is a scenic public recreation area in Lee County, Alabama, that has been open since 1939. Two cities in the county that you can quickly reach for food or supplies include Opelika and Smiths Station. The recreation area’s most significant feature is Lake Chewacla, a 26-acre body of water that offers a variety of recreational opportunities. The Civilian Conservation Corps developed the park’s attractions, including the dam that created Lake Chewacla, throughout the 1930s and eventually gave possession of the land to the state. In September of 2020, it was the recipient of TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Award, which acknowledges attractions that consistently receive positive reviews from visitors. Auburn RV Park at Leisure Time Campground is a family-friendly camping destination in the area that offers a variety of sites and accommodations. Some of the sites are located along Parkerson Mill Creek, where you can experience a tranquil atmosphere and listen to the flowing waters. Eagle Landing RV Park is an exceptional campground nearby that includes both pull-through and back-in sites. Chewacla State Park has a beautiful trail system for hiking and mountain biking that has been recognized as a National Recreation Trail since 2011. Lake Chewacla is a wonderful place to go swimming or fishing for species such as crappie, bream, bass, and catfish. While there is no boat launch to allow access for motorized boats, guests are allowed to go kayaking and canoeing. Wildlife viewing is another popular endeavor; some of the animals that inhabit the premises include turkeys, chipmunks, red foxes, deer, and squirrels. Visitors can enjoy relaxing family time at the social pavilion or one of the many picnic areas located throughout the state park.

Birmingham, Alabama, is a convenient city from which to travel to Chewacla State Park. To begin the route, get onto I-65 S. After following I-65 S and I-85 N to US-29 S/S College St in Auburn, take exit 51 from I-85 N. Take Shell Toomer Pkwy to Murphy Dr to arrive at the destination.

Chewacla State Park has 36 modern campsites with water, sewage, and electricity hookups. All their spacious RV sites have gravel pads and can accommodate motorhomes up to 60 feet long.
While reservations aren't required, they are recommended as the best spots can fill up quickly. Feel free to call ahead or use the online reservation portal. Expect to pay a $5 reservation fee in addition to the daily rate.
You’re welcome to hike the trails at Chewacla State Park with your pets. They must be kept on a leash and aren’t allowed in the swimming area. Be sure to bring enough water for you and them to stay hydrated.
