Located on the harbor mouth of Newport, Rhode Island, the historic Fort Adams State Park offers a range of recreation opportunities for visitors of all ages. The centerpiece of this park is Fort Adams, a former army post that was established in 1799. To learn more about the fort, sign up for a guided tour. Afterward, you can enjoy panoramic views of the harbor and Narragansett Bay. This recreation area, which is 8 miles from Middletown and 12 miles from Portsmouth, also offers swimming, boating, picnicking, and athletic fields. While the park is open all year, summer is the most popular time for visitation.

The area offers many interesting sites for you to enjoy, such as the Kit Wright walking trail, a rocky beach, and, of course, the fort itself.

Fort Adams State Park offers a wide variety of activities to choose from. You can learn about the history and restoration of Fort Adams during one of the hourlong guided tours or explore the grounds yourself. The park also offers saltwater bathing, fishing, and picnicking. You'll find the sandy beach facing into Benton Cove. Throughout the year, the park hosts events like Movies At The Fort, golf tournaments, and annual summer folk and jazz music festivals.
How to Get to
Fort Adams State Park
Fort Adams State Park is on the southern tip of Rhode Island's Aquidneck Island. The island can be accessed from highways 138, 114, or 214. From downtown Newport, head south on Thames Street and veer right on Carroll Avenue. You'll then make a quick right on Harrison Avenue. This eventually connects with Fort Adams Drive, which goes north into the park. Also, the park can be entered from the sea by taking either the Jamestown-Newport Ferry or the Oldport Maine Shuttle Service.
